What Does It Involve?

The purpose of this procedure is to reduce the size of the stomach by up to approximately 85%, leaving it tubular and with a capacity of 250 ml, compared to the 2000 ml capacity of a normal stomach. This reduces the patient's calorie intake, allowing them to be satisfied with small amounts of food and remain satisfied for a longer period of time. Furthermore, they will not suffer from hunger because the Gastric Sleeve limits the production of ghrelin, the hunger hormone.

When Is It Recommended?

We recommend the Gastric Sleeve for patients with some degree of obesity, which can range from mild, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of around 30, to very severe, with a BMI over 40. The latter are ideal candidates for this procedure. Therefore, if you are more than 40 kilos overweight, this would be the right option for you. You may also be a candidate for Gastric Sleeve if you suffer from a condition associated with being overweight: sleep apnea, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, or if your BMI is around 30, although this must be determined by one of our certified physicians.

What Benefits Does Gastric Sleeve Offer?

Its advantages include maintaining the flow of the digestive tract, as it does not require junctions between the intestines. It also prevents malabsorption at the intestinal level. How much weight can you lose with gastric sleeve surgery?

Most patients lose between 60–70% of their excess body weight within the first 12–18 months following surgery. Results vary depending on adherence to dietary guidelines, physical activity, and individual metabolic factors.

Is the surgery reversible?

Gastric sleeve surgery is considered a permanent procedure, as the removed portion of the stomach cannot be restored. However, it can be converted to other bariatric procedures such as gastric bypass if needed in the future.

Can you feel hunger again after the surgery?

In the early months following surgery, hunger is significantly reduced because the sleeve removes the part of the stomach that produces ghrelin, the hunger hormone. Over time, some appetite may return, but it will be much lower than before surgery.

How long does the recovery take?

Most patients are discharged within 2–3 days after surgery. You can return to light daily activities within 2–3 weeks, and to more physical work within 4–6 weeks. Full recovery and dietary adjustment may take 3–6 months.
