GASTRIC SLEEVE
Gastric sleeve surgery has demonstrated extraordinary results in our patients. Furthermore, it is one of the newest procedures in bariatric surgery. Therefore, it is fully approved as a weight loss procedure by the ASMBS (American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery) and the IFSO (International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders).
WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?
The purpose of this procedure is to reduce the size of the stomach by up to approximately 85%, leaving it tubular and with a capacity of 250 ml, compared to the 2000 ml capacity of a normal stomach. This reduces the patient's calorie intake, allowing them to be satisfied with small amounts of food and remain satisfied for a longer period of time. Furthermore, they will not suffer from hunger because the Gastric Sleeve limits the production of ghrelin, the hunger hormone.
WHEN IS IT RECOMMENDED?
We recommend the Gastric Sleeve for patients with some degree of obesity, which can range from mild, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of around 30, to very severe, with a BMI over 40. The latter are ideal candidates for this procedure. Therefore, if you are more than 40 kilos overweight, this would be the right option for you. You may also be a candidate for Gastric Sleeve if you suffer from a condition associated with being overweight: sleep apnea, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, or if your BMI is around 30, although this must be determined by one of our certified physicians.
WHAT BENEFITS DOES GASTRIC SLEEVE OFFER?
Its advantages include maintaining the flow of the digestive tract, as it does not require junctions between the intestines. It also prevents malabsorption at the intestinal level. It is also technically simpler than Gastric Bypass, and no foreign body is placed inside the patient, something that causes concern for many people. Although it is a primarily restrictive procedure, it also offers many metabolic benefits that you can access.
Finally, at our Hospital, we have developed a surgical technique that is primarily based on your safety during surgery.
HOW IS THE PROCEDURE PERFORMED?
This procedure is also known as a "vertical gastrectomy" and a "sleeve" because the shape of the stomach, once the procedure is completed, effectively resembles that of a sleeve. This procedure involves the removal of up to 80% of the stomach. Hence the importance of our focus on ensuring that the procedure is safe for you.
