BREAST REDUCTION
Breast reduction is a surgical procedure in which we remove excess skin and breast tissue through different types of incisions, determined by the distance between the areola and the sternal notch. Depending on breast size, we will use one technique or another; but generally, it is a tissue and skin reduction surgery, what we call an inverted T incision, to remove the excess tissue.
When are breasts considered large? It all depends on the dimensions of the chest. A larger chest can accommodate larger breasts without appearing disproportionate.
Even so, we have fairly standardized measurements regarding the distance from the sternal notch to the areola-nipple complex. If this areola-nipple complex is below the inframammary fold, we can consider the breast to be sagging.
Another dimension to consider is bra cup size. Generally, a B or C cup is fairly standardized, but exceeding these measurements is considered a large breast size. However, this is a personal matter for each patient.
How many sizes can breasts be reduced?
This is a very interesting question because each patient may require different breast volumes. One patient may think that a B cup is what she wants, while another patient may prefer a D cup. There is no standardized breast size for everyone; it's personalized for the patient. Some people want a smaller cup size, and others a larger one. The important thing is that it's proportionate to the breast base, which is determined by the chest circumference. At Clínica Planas, we always strive to ensure that the breast size is proportionate to the chest circumference and base, but the patient always tells us if she wants a larger or smaller volume.
What are the benefits of breast reduction?
The first benefit is functional, as the patient will feel more comfortable in her daily routine. Simple activities like dressing or personal hygiene will be easier after losing excess breast volume and weight. There are also health benefits for the back and neck, as patients with heavy breasts tend to have a hunched posture. In some cases, we can remove up to two kilos simply by removing breast tissue.
Finally, there is also the aesthetic benefit, as we will achieve breasts that are more harmonious and in proportion to the patient's chest.
